OFFROAD DRIVING TIPS

Think Ahead

As in all types of driving anticipating what is coming ahead is extremely important. This could entail carrying the appropriate equipment for given weather conditions, walking an area first to find hidden obstacles in overgrown areas, or assessing the depth and suitability of water crossings.

Vehicle Preparation

Give your vehicle a thorough check before starting out, including all fluid levels and tyre pressures. Check 4x4 system engages/disengages properly.

Steep Climbs

Select a gear that will get you to the top at a sensible pace. Some shorter climbs can be overcome using a run-up and momentum though on longer climbs this can lead to trouble when the momentum runs out, with the vehicle in too high a gear before reaching the top of the slope. Excess speed is therefore very often counter productive. Do practice "escapes" from hill climbs by first stopping then selecting reverse and using engine braking to descend a slope. Tackle the slope head on where possible. Make sure you know both your own and the vehicles limits.

Choose Offroad Tyres

If you're really serious about off road driving, you could consider some specialist offroad tyres. Greenway Tyres manufatured by Colway Tyres are extremely popular in the 4x4 & agricultural communities. The Greenway Macho is a favourite amongst farmers and offroaders who need to drive on road as well, but for real serious grip the Greenway Alligator (not road legal) is a must have tyre.

Steep Descents

The key here is to select a low gear and rely on engine braking to get you to the bottom of the hill, so keep both feet off the pedals. In the event that the tyres lose traction and start to slide a short blip on the throttle will help to regain traction.

Water Crossings

Unless your vehicle has been specially prepared it is not advisable to cross water deeper than the centre of your wheels or maybe up to the door sills if really necessary. Drive slowly through water creating a bow wave in front of the vehicle. This can help to keep the water level lower in the engine bay. Do not stall with the exhaust under water. Most of all assess the crossing first, which very often means putting on some wellies or waders and walking it first.

Getting Stuck

Once a vehicle has become stuck, don't make the mistake of trying loads of revs to get you out of the situation as it will often make matters worse. Try reversing out using minimal revs or rocking the vehicle out by using reverse and forward gears in quick succession. Most of all learn to admit defeat, get out and assess the situation. Lowering tyre pressures can help, but be sure to drive carefully as it is much easier to break the bead and always pump back up to normal pressure ASAP. And if you are well and truly stuck, do not be afraid to admit defeat and seek assistance/recovery.
